A statute of limitations is a law passed by a legislative body to set the maximum time after an event within which legal proceedings may be initiated.
For example, the statute of limitations in Nebraska for a workers’ compensation claim is two years from the date of the injury, or two years from the last date workers’ compensation payments (medical or disability) were made.
For an auto collision, the Nebraska statute of limitations is USUALLY four years from the date of the event. There are exceptions to this rule, however! For example, the rules are different if your auto collides with a government vehicle (i.e. city bus, police car).
If you have a personal injury or workers’ compensation claim, talk to an attorney as soon as possible. The statute of limitations is just one aspect of your claim for damages and, if you miss it, your chance for recovery will be barred.
